French artisanal making
Rosewood is an exotic timber, very dense, very tough and very good at resisting water and insects. It comes in various distinctive hues, from a dark purple colour to purplish brown. Its scent is also particular as its sweet floral notes are reminiscent of the scent of roses – hence its name.
It has often been used in marquetry as a veneer for furniture, but is also typically usd to make musical instruments.
In fact, rosewood tree is involved in the manufacturing of French bassoons, many guitars, some clarinets, some parts of violins, violas, cellos and double basses as well as the bars of xylophones and marimbas, to which it gives a unique sound ! It gives a very bright and almost metallic sound when hit, and its beauty and acoustic qualities have made it a favourite of musical instruments manufacturers for centuries.
