French artisanal making
Abalones are marine snails. They have a one piece shell and are found in shallow waters along the coast. They live in cold to temperate and subtropical waters of both the Northern and Southern hemisphere. One of the French names for abalone is "sea ear".
Mother of pearl lines the inside of oyster shells and those of other molluscs such as abalone. Mother of pearl is well known for its lustre and magnificent shimmer. Nacre is in fact layers of a secretion of aragonite by certain molluscs. It builds up to imprison parasites, dirt and any foreign bodies.
