The semi-precious stone of turquoise is extracted from the fissures in rocks rich in aluminium.
It gets its name from the time of the crusades. The stone was regularly traded through Turkey and therefore simply became known as the ‘Turkish stone’, an amusing fact, since it actually came from Persia!
The extraction of turquoise dates back to Antiquity – 6,000 BC in Egypt and 5,000 BC in Persia. The Aztecs, Mayas, Anasazis, Zuñi, Navajos and Apaches were all so fascinated by the beauty of turquoise that they used the stone as currency after the 16th century!
Turquoise is blue in colour, but has green and white variations in some stones.
Original turquoise is the colour its name suggests, a kind of opaque bluey-green. The blue-green colour of turquoise derives from the copper that it contains.
Legends and myths surrounding turquoise:
The stone is said to protect against falls and accidents; it is also thought to prevent nightmares and anxiety-filled dreams, while for those who dream of turquoise it is thought to bring fortune and good luck.
