The Hermione was a French warship that sailed between 1779 and 1793. It was an immense 1,166 ton frigate measuring 66 m from prow to stern. 316 men could embark on her. With magnificent sails spanning 2,200 m2, the ship could reach a respectable 14.5 knots.
She came to fame being the ship aboard which La Fayette arrived in the USA in 1780 to join the rebels and help them in their fight for independence.
La Fayette: a legendary person for Americans
• A name forever linked to the American Revolution. It is the name of 40 towns, 7 counties and a mountain.
• One of the fathers of American independence, a statue was raised in his honour in 1891 in Washington, not far from the White House, in Lafayette Park.
As a homage to this superb ship, a replica of the 1779 Hermione was built in Rochefort beginning in 1997 and launched on 7 September 2014.
