Horseshoes have long been considered to bring good luck.

Warding off evil spirits.

According to folklore, a horseshoe can ward off evil spirits and protect a home from bad luck when it is fixed to the door of the house. Both branches pointing upwards, please.

A symbol of wealth...

In days of yore, if they happened to find a lost horseshoe, peasants could sell it to the blacksmith and receive what would seem like a small fortune in return. Made to protect horses' hooves, they were frequently lost and might be found along a path or road or in open fields.

A Roman legend tells how emperor Nero, to show the immense extent of his wealth, ordered his blacksmiths to fit his horses with horseshoes made of solid gold. Being badly fixed, the golden shoes were lost along his way. Poor peasants by chance travelling the same path would find the horseshoe and with it their fortune.

Strength and protection.

Some see in the actual shape of the horseshoe the initial of Christ, making it for them a symbol of good luck and fertility. Finally, by its solidity, iron is a symbol of strength and protection.
