Amourette is native to Guyana. Also known as snakewood, this wood is extremely hard and has a snakeskin-like pattern. It is typically an orangey-reddish brown with contrasting darker patches.
The French name ‘lettre mouchetée’ (in English ‘letterwood’) derives its name from one of the former uses of this wood: due to its density, it was used for making printer’s type, while the small black decorative patches explain the use of the term moucheté.
The advantage of this wood is that it undergoes little deformation with time, but it requires a minimum amount of care. It should, therefore, be kept in a dry place and cannot be cleaned in the dishwasher. Apply a little vegetable oil to the handle to restore its original sheen.
Did you know?
The density of snakewood is such that if immersed in water it will not float!

Very rough opening due to lack of smoothing on the peak of the notch at the base of the blade.
